December is all about events. Naturally, the ones happening in Valletta or St Julian’s take all the limelight. However, what is going on in villages and towns around the island is considerably noteworthy nonetheless. As a result, we couldn’t just shrug our shoulders and let it be. To make up for this we thought of compiling a list of the events which definitelty deserve your attention. They are happening at the core of our villages and towns and promise to be the proper alternative to all the repetitiveness typical to this season.
Rabat, December 7th-11th
The historical, narrow streets of Rabat have become the one Christmas wonderland you should visit. The Christmas market will display a selection of artisan products and Northern European renowned food items, such as the bratwurst and the hog roast, alongside a choice of more traditional Christmas delicacies and beverages. The Malta Christmas Carol Festival, happening at the Franciscan church on Saturday 10th, will be featuring some of Malta’s best choirs in an elegant evening of classic Christmas carols.
Mellieħa, December 8th-12th.
Happening between December 8th and December 12th, Milied Mellieħi is one of the first events bringing about the christmas excitement to the Northern Region with typical food stalls, music and dance.
Ir-Razzett l-Aħmar, Mosta, December 9th-11th
Promising to deliver some proper odd time in the Christmas season, Prog the Islands is back once more with the number one festival of progressive rock music by local practitioners. This is the first time that the festival will be taking place over two days. Featuring Falcon’s Flying Circus, The Ranch, Viper Soup Complex, Eyes to Argus, Ferret and Zvog, this edition shall be covering the heavy, the whacky and the old-school genres among others.
Teatru Salesjan, Sliema, December 10th
Following the success of Domus #1 , this second edition of Domus will be featuring two young but very promising local bands. Jack’s Fusion and The Travellers will be playing in an acoustic and intimate atmosphere at Teatru Salesjan, the one theatre in Sliema that is not typical to your regular theatre!
Oliver! The Musical
Savio College, Dingli December 17th
Featuring Ludwig Galea, Dorothy Bezzina, more than a hundred students and a live orchestra, this is the number one live performance not to miss this month! Directed by the renowned classical singer Dorothy Bezzina, Oliver! promises outsanding live singing, music, costumes and staging. A broadway-like musical is hitting Dingli, and you must watch it!
Imġiebaħ Visitors’ Centre, Selmun, December 18th
The genuine Christmas spirit will be once again restored within the humble and rural hamlet of Selmun, very close to Mellieħa. A Christmas procession with baby Jesus, a little girl’s sermon, a short theatrical piece and stalls of artisan and traditional products will all be making the Selmun Tower area a particular one indeed this christmas. Given the area, parking is definitely not a problem.
