Handball might not be as popular a sport locally as football or basketball, but with over 700 registered individuals playing competitively in both men’s and women’s leagues, it’s becoming extremely popular amongst Maltese of all ages.
Sports enthusiast, President and Swieqi Phoenix Handball Club Co-Founder Orlando Bonnici tells us about the thrills behind the relatively locally unknown sport, Handball.
“Handball is a challenging sport both mentally and physically,” says co-founder and President of Swieqi Phoenix Sports Club, Orlando Bonnici, who has been a National team player for 12 years. “It requires speed, strength, power, stamina, endurance, fitness and above all teamwork.”
The sport was introduced competitively in Malta in 1995 and nowadays, the Malta Handball Association houses over 40 registered teams namely Swieqi Phoenix HC, La Salle HC, Aloysians HC, Luxol HC & Kavallieri HC. In fact, the Malta Handball Association organises leagues for men, women, boys, and girls as early as under 13 years old, while some of the more experienced players are still playing over the age of 40.
“I have been involved in Handball for over 20 years now, most of which I have been a player with several local clubs. Then in 2010, I fulfilled a long-life dream of mine, and cofounded Swieqi Phoenix Handball Club together with my friend and colleague, Clinton Mifsud. Today, it stands as one of the largest handball clubs in Malta – our male and female teams competing in all categories and offering handball sessions to children as young as five years old.”
“The club is also part of the Swieqi Sports Association which includes other successful sports entities such as the Swieqi Phoenix Volleyball Club, Swieqi United Football Club and Swieqi Overseas Rugby Football Club. Together with Swieqi Phoenix Volleyball Club, another success story on its own, and the Phoenix American Football team, we also form part of the larger Phoenix Sporst Club Malta” says Orlando.
Handball was developed in Europe and is renowned to be a dynamic and exciting Olympic sport, played by over 15 million people in approximately 140 countries around the world.
“Our club aims at lifting more silverware this year and in the years to come, it is slowly building itself up to strongly compete both on a local level and on an international level. Our aim this year is to attract strong local Handball players as well as to invest heavily in our youth teams. We couldn’t do this on our own and without the support of our investors. This year in particular, we have signed an agreement with the team at Yobetit.com which is investing heavily in our clubs.” says Orlando.
“We are constantly looking for new and experienced players of all ages to join our teams. The great thing about handball is that it is equally attractive to both males and females of all ages.”We look forward to welcoming you to our club to show you how great handball can be, once you get to experience it”.
