Jamin Farrugia speaks to us about his career in the barbering industry and the opening of his new shop Barber J. He also offers his own grooming tips to all those supporting the Movember cause, an annual event, where men grow their facial hair during the month of November in order to encourage conversation and raise awareness on men’s health.
1. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A BARBER?
I was 15 years old and still in school when I decided that hairdressing was a career I wanted to take on. I then enrolled in different courses to pursue my dream in the industry.
2. DO YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE WORKING IN OTHER BARBERSHOPS AND WHAT LED TO THE OPENING OF BARBER J?
I worked with a renowned unisex hairdressing salon for two years. For the following eight years I worked lots of other jobs, however, I kept working as a barber in different barber shops on a part-time basis. This is how I was inspired to continue working in the barbering industry and eventually open my own barber shop in Birkirkara.
3. WHAT IS IT ABOUT YOUR PARTICULAR STYLE THAT MAKES CLIENTS GRAVITATE TOWARDS YOU? ARE THERE ANY HAIRSTYLES YOU ARE KNOWN FOR?
I do not have any particular style. I try to accommodate clients as much as possible by giving them what they want, whilst also providing them with my opinion with regards to which look I’d think they’d pull off. I am open to different ideas and keep myself up to date with the current fashion trends which inspire me to create my own styles. I find great satisfaction in giving my clients a fresh look and helping them look and feel good.
4. WHAT IS THE MOST STRESSFUL PART OF WORKING AS A BARBER?
The responsibility of giving my 100% to make sure the client leaves the salon happy with the final look. I also make it a point not to leave clients waiting, and having back to back appointments can become stressful since I run the salon alone.
5. DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS ON GROWING AND GROOMING FACIAL HAIR, ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE WHO WILL BE CONTRIBUTING TO THE MOVEMBER MOVEMENT TO RAISE AWARENESS REGARDING MEN’S HEALTH ISSUES?
One needs to be patient, eat healthy, and exercise. The amount of facial hair all comes down to hormones, so it is of great importance to include foods that increase testosterone in the body. Testosterone is converted to dihydrotestosterone, which directly affects the beard and hair growth patterns. With regards to grooming, one must make sure they wash and scrub with a specialised cleanser regularly, especially in the early stages of growth. In this way, you will avoid any itchiness that might occur. Dry it gently with a soft towel to avoid frizz and split ends. If the person has a full on beard, the best way to soften it is to use beard shampoo and conditioner, and then finish with a beard oil or balm. Invest in a good pair of grooming scissors and wax to maintain your moustache, too ! No one likes beards or moustaches that look unkept, afterall.
6. WHAT ARE THE GO TO HAIR-CUTS FOR 2019?
Short haircuts for men are trending in 2019. They are the go-to haircut styles for most guys, especially those who are into more of a simple look. There is a variety of short hairstyles, which are easy to maintain; may of these haircuts are short around the sides and back, with an easy-to-manage shorter length on top. Of course, haircuts aren’t one-size-fits-all and one should always choose their hairstyle according to their face shape.
