Antonella Grech was born in 1996, the first of four children. She studied a BSc in Earth systems and is now starting an M.Sc in Applied oceanography- a completely different profile one would expect for one of Malta’s most innovative food entrepreneurs. Having tried the foods for a week, we can certainly vouch for innovative recipes, the convenience of ready prepared meals and even weight loss (and a big love for protein cookies). DAYNA CLARKE caught up with Antonella to find out more about NVKED and what she hopes to achieve with her healthy business venture.

WHAT IS EXACTLY IS NVKED?
Our mission is to introduce a culture of healthy and environmentally conscious living among the Maltese population. Our services cater for today’s busy lifestyles by providing pre-prepared, nutritionally balanced, healthy meals and treats. In doing so, we also aim to promote an environmentally conscious living by using recyclable or reusable packaging, encouraging our clients to take part in recycling efforts as well as reduce our carbon footprint through locally sourced ingredients.

YOU MUST BE VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT HEALTHY
PRODUCTS- WHERE DOES YOUR LOVE FOR HEALTHY
FOOD COME FROM?
My love of food comes mainly from the fact that I used
to be very unhealthy; I binged all the time and had to
lose nearly 70kg. I learnt a lot in the process and grew
to to love healthy food.

NVKD VIDA MAGAZINE

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RECIPES?
I would describe my recipes as very healthy substitutes
for the unhealthiest food imaginable- candy bars,
pizzas, and take-aways for example.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START NVKED?
The inspiration behind NVKED came from meeting up with a lot of people in the same predicament in terms of weight as I was. After sharing my journey and realizing that the problem for many people was lack of time to cook it motivated to me start NVKED.

WHAT IS THE PRIMARY FOCUS OF NVKED?
The key focus of NVKED is to provide our clients with lower calorie, healthier versions of their favourites, whilst leaving food as ‘’naked’’ as possible, by not using any artificial components.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT BEING AN
ENTREPRENEUR?
My favourite thing is having infinite room for growth and
letting creativity flow without any restraints.

WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION?
I think my biggest inspiration is looking at my parents
and how far they have come from starting up their own
business when they were still my age.

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU HAVE
FACED?
I would say my biggest challenges were probably trying to figure out how to actually put this idea I had into action.

WHAT IS THE BEST BUSINESS ADVICE YOU HAVE
RECEIVED?
To always look at what you can do better, improve, look forward, set goals and never look at what others are doing. Focus on your own prerogative.

WHAT’S IN STORE FOR THE FUTURE OF NVKED?
In the future I am looking at an expansion of the
business to be able to cater for more clients and larger
events as well as move overseas with some of the items
we have produced.
