Marco Parascandalo, better known as the creative director of the self-named PARASCANDALO fashion brand, has been busy developing his own slogans tees for a while now. In the four years since his debut at Malta Fashion Week, the brand has slowly and steadily dominated the local fashion scene by communicating a unique sense of identity through captivating slogans. We catch up with Marco and are given an introduction to his latest collection of tees…
WHEN DID YOUR PASSION FOR FASHION START? WHEN DID YOU FIRST REALISE YOU WANTED TO PURSUE A CAREER AS A DESIGNER?
When I was younger, my mum owned a boutique in Birgu where we used to sell womenswear and kidswear and I grew up loving what was around me. After my four years’ experience in London – where I experimented in most fields of the fashion industry – I realised that this is what I wanted to do.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING A FASHION DESIGNER?
Expressing my creativity with textile and people.
YOUR DEBUT COLLECTION SKANDLU WAS FIRST SHOWN AT MALTA FASHION WEEK IN 2014. HOW HAS THE BRAND EVOLVED SINCE THEN?
My first debut at Malta Fashion Week was a risk I took as nobody had done fashionable t-shirts with Maltese words. It was received very well and that is when PARASCANDALO was born. From showing six looks at Malta Fashion Week we now show up to 30 looks per show, also adding womenswear since the debut, where only menswear was showcased. We have worked with different textiles such as cotton, wool, silk and denim.
WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST FEAR WHEN GOING OUT AND STARTING YOUR OWN LINE?
People misinterpreting the vision of the collection.
WHICH OF YOUR PREVIOUS COLLECTIONS DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE ONE OF YOUR FAVORITES?
I have a special place in my heart for all of them because they all represent a part of me. Usually, I take inspiration from what’s around me, and I am 100% sure that my life experiences are portrayed in each collection.
THERE’S SO MUCH PRESSURE FOR DESIGNERS TO COME OUT WITH THEIR GREATEST COLLECTION SEASON AFTER SEASON. ARE YOU EVER SCARED PEOPLE WON’T REACT WELL TO A SPECIFIC COLLECTION?
I am a person who likes to take risks. In life, living in fear stops us from taking risks and if you don’t take risks you will never know what you’re capable of.
HOW DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO FEEL WHEN WEARING YOUR CLOTHES?
FABULOUS and most importantly comfortable. I want people to be able to move in my clothing. I want them to feel fashionable and current.
WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR LATEST COLLECTION?
My latest collection is called Vanity Rebels. In this collection I explored how social media is affecting the way we portray ourselves on it. In this collection you’ll find Maltese slogans such as: “AHJAR MINNEK” (better than you) and “ISBAH HEKK” (it’s prettier this way). I feel that social media is sometimes being used to make us feel better than others – for example by posting a picture of your new lip colour and you expect people to tell you how pretty you look. However, the PARASCANDALO customer is rebelling against this.
WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE EXPECT FROM YOU THIS YEAR? ANY PLANS IN THE PIPELINE?
This year we are taking a new approach – experimenting with some more colour and more options when it comes to outfitting. In the meantime, we are launching a capsule line of re-designed Maltese slogan t-shirts exclusively with you.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER LOCAL DESIGNERS TRYING TO MAKE A NAME FOR THEMSELVES?
Aim high but think small. It’s pointless creating everything in one go. Take your time to truly find what inspires you. It is important to do a lot of research, and find good references that will help you with your creativity.
