As the days are getting longer, our evenings outside the house are once again on the rise. With all the cultural events happening around the island, our weekends have the means for a more versatile schedule. Have a look at some prodigious events happening this May.
Edward Zinkowsky & Charlene Farrugia – Piano & Violin Recital
This classical music concert will be held at the National Museum of Archaeology, Republic Street, Valletta at 20:00. Featuring Edward Zinkowsky (piano) and Charlene Farrugia (violin), its programme includes: Mozart’s Sonata for violin and piano in G Major, KV 301; Debussy’s sonata for violin and piano in g minor, l 140 and Franck’s sonata for violin and piano.
Brikkuni – Rub Al Khali Launch concert

The pop-folk band Brikkuni will be officially launching their third album Rub Al Khali at the MCH Community Theatre, Attard. Both shows are sold out and in a facebook update, Brikkuni basically stated that although they are trying to accommodate many of those expressing interest in attending despite not managing to get a ticket in time, they promise that the experience of all the others shall not be impaired.
The Great Spring Horticultural Show
MAY 6, 7
A horticultural event at San Anton Gardens, Balzan, from 14:00 to 22:00 on May 6 and 08:00 to 21:00 on May 7. Featuring floral arrangements, plants, fruit, vegetables and crafts, this annual show also includes a programme of dancing exhibitions, folk music and various demonstrations. This event is being organised by the Malta Horticulture Society.
Schwingungen Piano Trio Vienna
This Classical music concert held at the National Museum of Archaeology, Valletta at 20:00 is featuring the Schwingungen Trio Vienna: violinist Sanghee Cheong, pianist Charlene Farrugia and cellist Stefan Kropfitsch. Programme includes: Glinka’s Trio pathetique in d minor; Beethoven’s piano trio op.70 ghost; and Arensky’s piano trio no.1 in d minor op.32.
Be-Wild Events: Magic Island + Yews
This one is a night of indie electro-pop music by German band Magic Island – launching their debut EP ‘Like Water’ – and supported by local act YEWS. Yews’s sounds have been described as electronic, ethereal pop, and she is known for having a different setup every time she performs live, playfully changing and adapting her simple songs. Taking place at the Floriana Boċċi Club at 22:00, entrance to this event is at €8.
Switch is a video performance emerging from the outcome results of CODE SWITCH #1, a research project combining epigenetics, performance and video art. Conceived and carried out by Cristina Ghinassi in collaboration with Dr Edward Duca, the major goal of the research project was to run a proof-of-concept performance by measuring the physiological characteristics and DNA methylation – in specific parts of the artist’s DNA before and after a test performance, that the artist repeated by herself in front of a camera for 28 days. Switch is taking place at Spazju Kreattiv, St James Cavalier, Valletta, at 20:00.
The Areola Treat Comeback Gig
After an absence from the live scene for more than a year, the Areola treat are back celebrating their 11th year since their first gig back in September 2006 at Poxx Bar. The comeback gig by this fan-favourite indie rock band is happening at Ir-Razzett L-Aħmar, Mosta at 20:00. Band kicks off at 21:30.
Heart & Soul
“The past is now part of my future”, Joy Division’s Ian Curtis once said. The troubled vocalist’s tragic death turned him into an icon whose legacy lives on not only among the generations of fans but especially in the music he made with his now-legendary band that has gone on to inspire countless bands and artists over the decades. This tribute night to Ian Curtis, happening at The Funky Monkey, Gzira at 22:00, will be featuring the DJ line-up of Lieutenant 030 (UK), Aidan Borg, Michael Bugeja and Joseph Felice.
Fleshgod Apocalypse – Live in Malta
Italian extreme metal band Fleshgod Apocalypse will be soon be gracing our shores in order to perform at the Orpheum Theatre, Gzira at 19:00. With support from local acts Thy Legion, Angelcrypt, Repugnance and Bound to Prevail, this event is promising total mayhem! Tickets are selling fast at €20 – €25.
Crossing – A Journey Through Music and Visual Art
Crossing – A Journey Through Music and Visual Art is a project that aims to bring together two forms of art – music and visual art, merging together space, form, beauty and colour. The idea is that both music and painting express emotion and ideas, and can work together to create something truly striking. The Launch, happening at the Robert Sammut Hall, Floriana, will be featuring art by Anthony Catania and music by Simon Sammut. Price includes the CD album and a full-colour booklet.
Malta World Music Festival

Falling within the six-month period of The Maltese Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the 2017 edition of the Malta World Music Festival will be once again celebrating the beauty of cultural diversity, the exchange and dialogue of people’s roots, and the vitality that is borne out of various experiences and expressed through the powerful medium of music. The World Music festival, taking place at Fort St Elmo, Valletta at 20:00, is featuring Brodu (Malta), Tsuumi Sound System (Finland), Tiwiza (Algeria/France), The Khoury Project (Jordan), Sona Jobareth (Gambia) and Bandadriatica (Italy).
From a Distance: Ġulja Holland
Being the second solo exhibition of paintings by young artist Ġulja Holland, From a Distance will be running at the Lily Agius Gallery in Sliema until June 24th .
Mozart at Midnight
In this very special event starting at midnight, the music of Mozart will be performed in the beautiful courtyard of the Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta. Featuring Brian Schembri (conductor) and Jose Garcia Gutierrez (French Horn), this is sure to be a night to remember. Programme includes: Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Horn Concerto No. 4 and Symphony No. 40. Organised by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and the Malta Community Chest Fund, Mozart at Midnight stems from the life of the composer who enjoyed a lavish lifestyle by hosting private concerts late into the night.
