If we were to ask what you thought was destroying our planet, would you ever think to say
it was those cotton buds you used last night? Or that unused lipstick that’s been on your
bathroom sink for weeks? Or your toothbrush, even? Before you answer, take a second to think
about the facts. Amy Micallef Decesare tells us more.

Did you know that women waste an average of 5,486 beauty
products in their lifetimes? Just a note: that amounts to no less
than €203,295!
According to a study conducted by Vaseline, we hoard most of our
beauty products throughout our lives, including 840 moisturisers,
360 nail varnishes and 300 lipsticks!
What about men, I hear you ask? The same study found that on
average, men own around 12 products per year, amounting to 960
in their lifetime. It was also found that there is little to no wastage
on their ends. Conclusion: we have to up our game!
That’s not all. That dreaded time of the month has arrived. How
many tampons and sanitary pads would you say you use and
dispose of during those four to five joyful days? Just to put you in
the picture, in Malta alone, your tampons (plus everyone else’s)
generate over 97 tonnes of landfill waste every year!

In addition to the fact that they last years not 6-8 hours, they’re
chemical free, 100% organic, 100% safe, and easy to use. Plus, you
can wear them all day and all night without the constant worry that
you might spend your evening with an embarrassing leak.
Investing in an Organicup means huge savings for your wallet as
well as for our planet. Also, I think we can all agree that there’s a
million things we’d rather spend our hard-earned money on than
menstruation, right?
I bet you’ve never given a second of thought to just how many
cotton buds make their way into your ears and then into your bins
throughout your life. Well, 40 tonnes of landfill waste per year is
generated by those small and cute buds; equivalent to the distance
from Malta to the UK and back (twice!) if placed end to end.
Did you know that studies have shown that cotton buds are
actually NOT recommended for your ears as oftentimes you’re
damaging your ears drums? Even if you think you’re an earcleaning
pro, we’re actually supposed to let our ears clean
themselves. If you see that an abundance of wax is forming, it’s
recommended that you go and see a doctor. Otherwise, pass on
those buds next time.
Yes. Despite toothbrushes having a longer shelf life than what
we’ve already mentioned, 800,000 of them are being used per
year in Malta, thus generating up to 20 tonnes of waste.
We may use the same toothbrush for 3-4 months, but one single
brush takes over 400 years to degrade.
Every component of bamboo toothbrushes are plant-based,
ranging from the bristles to the handle, eliminating plastic
completely. Plus, due to bamboo containing naturally-occurring
antimicrobial agents, there’s no need for fertilisers or pesticides
during its cultivation.
Looking for a zero waste beauty routine?
• Moisturise using coconut oil. It’s fabulous for makeup
removal, it tackles fungal infections, and acts as an
antibacterial shield. Oh and did we mention that it prevents
premature ageing too?
• Get creative and make your own toothpaste. How? Combine 2
tablespoons of coconut oil, 2 tablespoons of baking soda, 10
drops of peppermint oil (optional) and get brushing!
• Want to take it up a level and make your own deodorant too?
Not a problem. All you need is a cup of baking soda, another
cup of arrowroot powder (or cornstarch), 5 tablespoons of
coconut oil and 20 drops of grapefruit essential oil (or any
other essential oil with antibacterial properties)
• Finally… for your very own home made shampoo, simply
combine 1 part baking soda with 3 parts water, apply at
the roots, wait a couple of minutes and rinse! It’s that easy.
Conditioner? Do the same with apple cider vinegar and off you
